Das Gemälde wurde vor 1723 durch den sächsischen Kabinettsminister August Christoph Graf von Wackerbarth für August II., König von Polen und Kurfürst von Sachsen, erworben. Seine Ersterwähnung erfuhr es im Dresdner Gemäldeinventar von 1722–1728, wonach es seinerzeit im königlichen Residenzschloss ausgestellt war. 1765 war es laut Galeriekatalog von Johann Anton Riedel und Christian Friedrich Wenzel in der Äußeren Galerie – den der nordalpinen Malerei vorbehaltenen Räumen – des Galeriegebäudes am Neumarkt ausgestellt und damit einem größeren Publikum zugänglich. Später kam es auch im 1855 eröffneten Museumsbau von Gottfried Semper am Zwinger zur Aufstellung. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde es zunächst in der Meißner Albrechtsburg ausgelagert und noch Ende April 1945 von dort in den Eisenbahntunnel am Lohmgrund bei Rottwerndorf verbracht. Es gehört zu den Werken, die seit 1945 vermisst werden.
