Summary
[edit]DescriptionChicago Surface Lines 4391 at the Illinois Railway Museum - July 2017.jpg |
English: This is the last surviving postwar PCC streetcar of a Chicago Surface Lines/Chicago Transit Authority fleet that once numbered over 600. (The Illinois Railway Museum also has a prewar PCC ,without the standee windows, painted in the "Blue Goose" livery of the Chicago Surface Lines.) The others were either returned to their maker, St. Louis Car Company, and many of their components used to make the CTA's 6000 series el train cars or outright scrapped.
There were streetcars waiting to be delivered to the CTA when the decision was made to stop running streetcars; they were torn down and their parts were immediately cannibalized for el cars. One particular PCC streetcar, identical to this one, was involved in a fiery crash with a gasoline tank truck in May of 1950 at 62nd and State. The last streetcar line in the city, taken out of service in 1958, was the 22 Clark-Wentworth. When buses started running the route, it was split into the 22A (now 22) Clark and the 22B (now 24) Wentworth. The 22 runs every half hour all night 7 days a week; the 24 lost its night and weekend service in the 1997 cutbacks. |
