[edit]DescriptionChildren's Library Garden - Laid Out.jpg |
English: 8 October 2011. With a wicker teepee and more planting, the new Children's Library Garden at Marcus Garvey library is now completed.
When I was elected to Haringey Council, Bernice Vanier and I ran a monthly advice session at Marcus Garvey Library, Tottenham Green. In July 2009 we noticed that the piece of land outside the windows was very uncared for. There were weeds, and even some dumped rubbish. We imagined how it could look as a garden / play / nature area attached to the Children's Library. Diana Edmonds then Head of Haringey Libraries told me that the staff at Marcus Garvey Library had a similar idea - an outside reading area for children. The Library Service developed plans to clear the ground and were looking for additional funding. By October 2009 weeds and rubbish were cleared. But then they hit a snag - buried builders' rubble. A photo in December 2010 showed the progress made by a team from the Future Jobs Fund - a Government programme offering young people temporary employment. As well as improving library gardens, Haringey's Culture, Libraries and Learning Department had teams of FJF staff cataloguing books; undertaking arts projects; archiving records and working at Bruce Castle Museum. The aim of the FJF programme was giving participants relevant work experience - and improving their chances of getting permanent jobs. Haringey had some great FJF staff; several found permanent jobs. The Tory/Liberal Coalition Government 2010 scrapped the programme. Photos from July to October 2011 show the garden completed. ________________________________________ § Aerial view of where this photo was taken. § My photoset showing progress in creating this garden between July 2009 and October 2011. § View the photoset as a slideshow. |
