(Note: I've blurred customers' faces.) "Chiquen" opened in Wood Green in August 2015. It was one of a number of chicken restaurants which offered a different 'slant' to more established fried chicken shops. Though perhaps its 'newness' was not so different to some others. Here, I'm thinking about a restaurant which was called Chicken Town - also in Haringey, but overlooking Tottenham Green. Both restaurants appeared to share a fashion for serving dishes made popular as "street food". Both were committed to supplying high quality, British reared chickens from farms which, they tell us, care about their animals. Both offered "healthier" cooking. ● Chiquen's birds were described as "fire-grilled, not fried". Chiqen website said: "... all of our chickens come from happy little chicken farms in East Anglia produced by British farmers who care about their product which is always fresh and never frozen. We have chosen to only serve halal chicken as a reflection of the diversity in our communities." ● Chicken Town served: "happy herb-fed chickens which we gently steam before flash-frying in rapeseed oil, for a delicious, healthier treat." [Source: Chicken Town website) Unlike Chicken Town, Wood Green Chiquen don't have an attractive Listed building for their premises. And despite the name 'Wood Green' there is no nearby wood nor a Green. ● As far as I know, Chiquen did not had a grant and/or loan from Haringey Council. ● Chicken Town were awarded a grant from Haringey Council of £90,000; plus a soft loan of £210.000. (Never repiaid). They also had significant, free council publicity. What's the Difference? What's the reason for Chicken Town being favoured? They said they are a non-profit social enterprise "looking to improve things for young people in our area". They also claimed to be "tackling obesity", by serving healthier steamed and "flash fried" chicken as "Junior Specials" for under 18 yrs olds. ● Chicken Town stressed their training and mentoring for locally recruited staff. ( Read more here). ● I don't know about the training received at Chiquen and other restaurants. Chicken Town Wood Green closed in December 2017 www.chicken-town.co.uk/#closing. |
