Summary[edit]

Description
English: Chiswick Park Underground Station, 6 April 2023. The original station was opened in July 1879 as Acton Green by the Metropolitan District Railway on its extension from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway. It was renamed Chiswick Park and Acton Green in 1887 and again in 1910 as Chiswick Park.

In 1931-32 the Underground Electric Railways of London rebuilt the station to enable the 1932-33 extension of the Piccadilly Line to go through the station by adding two centre tracks; Piccadilly Line trains did not stop there. The new station was designed by Charles Holden, consultant architect to the UERL, in European Streamline Moderne style, this particular station being of his ‘drum’ variety as opposed to his box or cube style. To make the station more visible from Chiswick High Road a tall tower was added. It is said that Holden was inspired by Alexander Grenander’s Krumme Lanke underground station in Berlin.

The station is listed Grade II. As an aside, the station is on the site of the 1642 Battle of Turnham Green in the First English Civil War.

Pictured is the westbound platform with the tower (and UndergrounD roundel) prominent. Note the original concrete and glass shelter.
