| Description |
English: On 30 September 1972 Christchurch opened a new Town Hall along the banks of the Avon River. Designed by Christchurch architects Warren and Mahoney and built in modernist style, the centre included facilities for musical performances and lectures, as well as a dining area. Well regarded for its acoustic properties, the main auditorium has hosted musical events ranging from symphonic orchestras and school choral performances, to rock concerts and electronic dance music.
The Town Hall complex was badly damaged during the 2011 earthquakes. However, it was earmarked for restoration and is currently undergoing repairs. These images of the Town Hall were transferred to Archives New Zealand from the National Publicity Studios. They include an aerial view, the Ferrier Fountain (Victoria Square), the main auditorium, and the James Hay Theatre.
