Description
English: Document: 'Christmas in London 1705', 1905. Catalogue ref: COPY 1/232 (294)

Description:

This illustration shows a group of women with candles walking down a hallway, followed by a woman holding up a plate with a roasted peacock on it.

Whatever people like to eat for Christmas, one thing is for certain: food plays a central role in the celebrations. Inside the collection at The National Archives, there are hundreds of documents that can tell us about the food eaten at Christmas from Tudor times through to the twentieth century.

This 1905 illustration aims to showcase what Queen Anne would have eaten for Christmas in 1705. Roasted peacock was a fashionable choice of meat for the wealthy from medieval times onwards. As you can see in this illustration, the feathers of the bird have been re-attached after roasting it to make it look even more extravagant.

With this document, students could consider:

- How does this illustration line up with your expectations of a Christmas meal?

- What do people in Britain eat for Christmas nowadays? How does it compare to Queen Anne’s meal here?

- Why do you think this illustration was made in 1905 illustrating a Christmas meal 200 years earlier? What might it have been used for?
