Summary[edit]
DescriptionChromian diopside (Almklovdalen Peridotite, Precambrian; Gusdal Olivine Pit, near Åheim, Norway) 1.jpg |
English: Chromian diopside from the Precambrian of Norway.
Diopside is a member of the pyroxene group of silicate minerals. It has the chemical formula CaMgSi2O6 - calcium magnesium silicate. The intensely green colored material in this rock is a variety called chromian diopside, Ca(Mg,Cr)Si2O6 - calcium magnesium chromium silicate. I'm not sure what the pitch black colored material is, but it appears to be non-chromium-bearing pyroxene. If so, the rock itself is a pyroxenite, a type of ultramafic, intrusive igneous rock. This gorgeous material comes from a Norwegian quarry that targets olivine-rich peridotites. The olivine has multiple industrial and environmental uses. Geologic unit: Almklovdalen Peridotite (Western Gneiss Region), apparently Proterozoic (possibly Paleoproterozoic) Locality: Gusdal Olivine Pit (also known as the Åheim Olivine Pit), a quarry 3 to 4 kilometers east-southeast of the town of Åheim, Vanylven Municipality, Møre og Romsdal County, southwestern Norway (vicinity of 62° 01' 14.08" North latitude, 05° 35' 27.92" East longitude) Photo gallery of diopside & chromian diopside: www.mindat.org/gallery.php?min=1033 and www.mindat.org/gallery.php?min=1294 |
