Add a one-line explanation of what this file represents
Description Originally a Medieval church in Lisbon's old Alfama district below the Castelo, it was extensively rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. The church was also greatly enlarged during the period of Spanish rule (1580 - 1640), the church was expanded by the Spanish King Phillip II because it contained the body of St. Vincent of Saragossa, the patron Saint of Lisbon (who also happened to be of Spanish origin, thus reinforcing Phillip II's claim to the throne). St. Vincent was martyred by the Emperor Diocletian in 304 and his followers buried him in Roman Lusitania, which is now Portugal. For the story of St. Vincent, check the photo of the interior of the Church.
