Summary[edit]

Description

(Photo taken from a Saab 340 operated by Loganair. Not the best photo platform!)

On 14 October 1939 the British battleship HMS Royal Oak was torpedoed at her anchorage in the natural harbour of Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. There was great loss of life.

It came as a shock to the British people as Scapa Flow was considered a safe place for the fleet to anchor. However the German submarine found a way into the huge anchorage area via a shallow entrance.

The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill ordered that those shallow entrances to Scapa Flow be sealed up with concrete blocks and even old ships so as to "plug the holes" that could be used by hostile vessels. What became known as the Churchill Barriers were topped by roads and are now are a series of four causeways linking some of the scattered Orkney Islands.

Two of the barriers are seen in this photo from an aircraft approaching to land at Kirkwall Airport. Since I took this photo I believe a hotel has been build overlooking these barriers.
