Summary[edit]
DescriptionCicero Jabez Hamlin House, Buffalo, New York - 20200403 - 02.jpg |
English: The Cicero Hamlin House, 432 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. A superlative example of the Italianate Villa style in Buffalo, this handsome brick edifice dates to 1866 and sports all the classic hallmarks of the style: a small Corinthian portico with dentil molding under the roof, a shallow-pitched hipped roof with wide eaves supported by Italianate modillions, a stout tower seen here at left, and segmental-arched windows throughout. Also notable are the unusual elliptical windows at attic level. Cicero Jabez Hamlin (1819-1905) was one of Buffalo's most prominent citizens of his day; born in Columbia County in far eastern New York, he arrived in East Aurora in 1839 and kept a general store for a few years before moving again to Buffalo and continuing in the mercantile business until 1866 - the year this house was built - as partner in the firms of Wattles & Hamlin and later Hamlin & Mendsen. It was only afterward that the greatest measure of his success came, with his investment in the Buffalo Grape Sugar Company, of which he became president in 1874, and his founding of the Buffalo Driving Park, home of the famous "Kentucky Derby of the North" and now site of the Hamlin Park neighborhood that bears his name. By 1977, it was owned by the American Legion whose Post 665 was based there; it's now a popular restaurant. |
