הקרקע לבניית בית הקברות נרכשה בשנת 1871, לאחר שבית הקברות הקודם ברחוב אריאסטו הגיע לתפוסה מלאה. התכנון היה של הארכיטקט Marco Treves אשר הוציא לפועל את התוכנית בשנים 1881-1884 שער הכניסה מוביל לדרך מרכזית בבית הקברות המובילה לבית הטהרה המצוי במרכזו בבית הקברות נטמן רבי שמואל צבי מרגוליס (1858 - 1928) , אשר תרם לכך שקהילת יהדות פירנצה הייתה למרכז חיי התרבות היהודית באיטליה בשנים בין שתי מלחמות העולם
