Cinnamomum camphora, the camphor laurel, grows in a few locations along Downfall Creek in 7th Brigade Park. Camphor laurels were widely planted as shade trees in Queensland school yards in the early 20th Century.

English: Cinnamomum camphora, the camphor laurel, grows in a few locations along Downfall Creek in 7th Brigade Park. Camphor laurels were widely planted as shade trees in Queensland school yards in the early 20th Century. Mr Ron Robinson (deceased), a former pupil of Virginia State School, recalled planting the now well-established camphor laurel grove on the school's Sandgate Rd frontage in the early 1930s. It is likely that the Cinnamomum camphora trees along Downfall Creek are descendants of the Virginia trees as the schoolyard is adjacent to Downfall Creek. Cinnamomum camphora will often establish under trees that are used as perches by frugivorous birds and bats, which avidly consume its fruit and then defecate the seeds. |
