Summary

[edit]
Description The National Library, once the town hall, was constructed in 1896. On August 25, 1992, a shell fired from the lines of the Serbian forces wiped out a large part of the Bosnian literary heritage that was kept in the building; over two million books and documents went up in flames and only 1% of the library’s books could be saved. 200 people died trying to save books from the inferno. It reminds me of Isaac Asimov’s quote, “It is not only the living who are killed in war.” Restoration work is still ongoing.
