English: Classical Chinese language and Classical Meitei language (Literary Manipuri language) words for “elder sister” are 姐姐 (jiějiě) & ꯆꯦꯆꯦ (cheche) respectively (written in traditional Chinese characters and traditional Meetei Mayek script) Notably, both Chinese and Meitei belong to the Sino-Tibetan language family. Therefore, both the languages descend from their common ancestor, Proto-Sino-Tibetan language, thereby sharing strikingly similar vocabularies, with distinctive styles of pronunciations, spellings, tonality, etc.
