Painting of w:Claude Bernard, the physiologist, in his laboratory at the College de France, Paris. Bernard died in 1878. Bernard is the central figure. w:Paul Bert is standing third from the left. Charles Gross writes that "the experiment illustrated is one in which the vasomotor functions of the sympathetic nerves were demonstrated for the first time." The animal being experimented on is a rabbit. Gross writes that Bernard discussed this experiment in his An Introduction to the Experimental Study of Medicine (1865).
Author: Léon Augustin L'hermitte (1844–1925). The painting was created anonymously at first, according to Charles C. Gross (see below).
Date: Created in 1888.
Location: Académie Nationale de Médicine, Paris.
