| Description |
This building was originally constructed in 1838 as the house of George Merwin, and is located on Prospect Avenue in Cleveland's Central neighborhood. The house was originally constructed in the then-fashionable Greek Revival style by Charles Heard, whom also designed the Old Stone Church on Cleveland's Public Square in Downtown. Some time later, in the 1860s or 1870s, the house was modified and Italianate-style features, which were in style at the time, were added. In 1895, the Rowfant Club, a literature-focused organization founded three years prior, bought the house and converted it into their headquarters, which the building remains to this day. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, along with several nearby structures on Prospect Avenue, and is very well-preserved, one of several lovely former houses that grace this section of Prospect Avenue.
