Summary
[edit]DescriptionCleveland Public Auditorium, Cleveland, OH (27420327337).jpg | The Cleveland Public Auditorium was constructed in the Neoclassical Style in 1920-22, and is part of the Burnham Group Plan that was initially laid out in 1903. Designed by J. Harold McDowell and Frank Walker, the structure was the largest convention hall in the United States at the time, and was home to the Republican National Convention in 1924, only two years after its completion. The capacity of the main hall was initially 13,000, but this was reduced to 10,000 through later renovations. In 1928, the south end of the building saw the addition of the Music Hall and Little Theater, while the north end had a terrace constructed to better connect it to Lakeside Avenue. In 1936, the building saw two underground spaces added that were located under the Civic Center Mall, a ballroom and the Lakeside Exhibition Hall. During a subsequent renovation in 1964, the ballroom was removed, and replaced with the Great Hall of a new convention center. A tunnel was dug underneath Lakeside Avenue to connect the new Great Hall to the existing Lakeside Exhibition Hall, and an entrance to the convention center, a steel, concrete, and glass structure, was built along the western flank of the Public Auditorium building in order to serve as an entrance to the Convention Center, with its main entrance and passenger drop-off area being located one floor below the mall's surface. Another renovation was carried out in 1987, which reconfigured and updated the interior spaces of the convention center and Public Auditorium. The Convention Center was heavily renovated again in 2010, with the entrance to the Convention Center being moved from the western flank of the Public Auditorium to the south end of the mall along Lakeside Avenue. The Public Auditorium's western flank was restored to its original configuration, and the Convention Center was connected to a new Hilton Hotel and the Global Center for Health Innovation that were built on the west side of the mall. |
