Summary

[edit]
Description
English: object type / vase shape: attic black figure hydria

- description shoulder: Trojans watching the scene from the walls of Troy - belly: horses of quadriga coming from a building with columns, hoplite and man with Phrygian cap, (statue of) Athena, old man (Priamos) squatting, Achilles hurling (killing) the boy Troilos at the Altar of Apollon; nonsense inscriptions / alternative identification / interpretation: Neoptolemos killing Astyanax during the Ilioupersis, but the scene takes place outside the walls of Troy, and normally Neoptolemos is shown killing Astyanax (exactly like on this vase) and Priamos simultaneously. On the other hand the scenes showing Achilles pursuing the youthful Troilos (mostly on horseback, at fountain, often with broken hydria and fleeing Polyxena) follow a completely other composition. To my opinion the painter mixed both scenes together (mistakenly). - production place: Athens - painter: close to the Antiope Group (belonging to the Leagros Group) - period / date: late archaic, ca. 520-510 BC - material: pottery (clay) - height (including handle): 54.2 cm - findspot: Vulci (Candelori collection) - museum / inventory number: München, Staatliche Antikensammlungen 1700 (J 65) - bibliography: John D. Beazley, Attic Black-Figure Vase-Painters, Oxford 1956, 357, 362.27 - CVA München 19 (2017), plates 34.3-4, 36.1-2 - Beazley Archive Pottery Database 302022
