Description Arms (variant) of Sir w:Rhys ap Thomas KG (1449–1525) of Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire: Argent, a chevron between three Cornish choughs sable (variant) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1006 "Thomas tempore King Henry VII"; p.851 Argent, a chevron between three ravens, "Rice of Wales") Argent, a chevron between three ravens sable (Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.398, "Rhys, Baron Dynevor"). Sir w:Rhys ap Thomas KG (1449–1525) of Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, was a Welsh soldier and landholder who rose to prominence during the Wars of the Roses, and was instrumental in the victory of Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth. He remained a faithful supporter of Henry and was rewarded with lands and offices in South Wales. Some sources claim that he personally delivered the death blow to King Richard III at Bosworth with his poleaxe (circumscribed by the Garter). His descendants adopted the Anglicised surname "Rice", which in 1916 was changed by royal licence to "Rhys" (Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.399, "predecessors, Rhys, Baron Dynevor"). Rhys, Baron Dynevor, is a direct male-line descendant of Sir Rhys ap Thomas.
