Nederlands: Foto. "Soublette et Fils. Gisteren maakten deze heeren Fotografen gebruik van het buitengewoon voorrecht hun door H.M. de Koningin geschonken om het Koninklijk Wapen te mogen voeren en bevestigde dit aan den voorgevel van hun huis. Hun huis van Oranje voert nu het Nederlandsche Wapen onder de hollandsche drie-kleur, rood, wit en blauw, weergegeven door het dak, de kroonlijst en den breeden rand, waarin geschilderd staat: Soublette et Fils, Photografische Inrichting. Door het aanbrengen van het Koninklijk Wapen is thans de kroon op het werk gezet, dat den vreemdeling bij het binnenvaren van onze haven luide toeroept; Curaçao is een Hollandsche Kolonie"; aldus de krant Amigoe in Curaçao op 2 maart 1907.
Op deze foto zien we dat wapen van het Koninklijk Huis prominent op de gevel terug (N.B. overigens niet op de gevel aan de havenzijde maar aan de straatkant). Deze foto van 'Soublette et Fils' kunnen we dan ook in of na 1907 dateren; wellicht was de plaatsing in 1907 een geschikt moment voor het nemen van deze foto. Vanaf 1906 mocht de fotostudio het predikaat hoffotograaf - inclusief het koninklijk wapen - voeren. Het lijkt aannemelijk dat Felix Roberto Casper (Robert) Soublette (1846-1921) en Robert Joseph (Tito) Soublette (1870-1938) zelf voor de deur staan. Rechts op de hoek van het pand is waarschijnlijk een assistent te zien, mogelijk dezelfde persoon die op de achtergrond staat bij een portret van - ook weer aannemelijk - beide heren in hun fotostudio (10024794). Soublette et Fils hadden in 1901 de nieuwe fotostudio aan de Waterkant - dat in 1921 zou worden omgedoopt in Brionplein - geopend. (1) Het gebouw was speciaal ontworpen als fotostudio, let bijvoorbeeld op de schuin toelopende ramen aan de zijkant van het pand: zo was er alle ruimte voor het invallende buitenlicht. In de etalage zien we een keur aan uitgestalde foto's. Bewust of onbewust lijkt hier overigens een grap met een gans te worden uitgehaald: 'ze kijken naar het vogeltje'. Rob Jongmans 1) Schiltkamp 1999: 27 geeft als openingsjaar 1902, maar de krant Amigoe di Curaçao meldde op 17 augustus 1901: "Photographisch atelier. De Heeren Soublette & Zoon, die als photographen hier een bekenden en gevestigden naam hebben, hebben deze week hun nieuw en fraai ingericht atelier aan de Overzijde geopend." N.B. De naam van de wijk 'Otrabanda' betekent letterlijk 'de andere oever' oftewel 'Overzijde', waar de nieuwe studio van Soublette et Fils werd gevestigd. |
