| Description |
English: Willliamsburg was the capital of Virginia as a British Colony from 1699 to 1780, The capital was moved to Richmond for greater safety during the Revolutionary war since then. Much of the colonial city of Williamsburg deteriorated in later years. It was rebuilt and restored as Colonial Williamsburg, from 1926 through the 1930s. Most of the money was provided by John D. Rockefeller Jr., the son of the founder of the Standard Oil Co.
The Governor's Palace was originally built in 1705-1721. It was destroyed by fire in 1781. It was rebuilt in the reconstruction and opened in 1934. |
