NPS/Patrick Myers This recent photo of colorful leaves in Medano Canyon above the dunes prompts the question: Where do autumn colors come from? There are three basic color pigments in most leaves: ⚫ Green chlorophyll is the green substance in leaves that converts sunlight to energy through photosynthesis ⚫Yellow and orange carotenoids are found in bananas, corn, carrots, etc., as well as leaves and grasses ⚫ Red and purple anthocyanins give color to cranberries, strawberries, grapes, etc., and are present within the cells of leaves and grasses. As days shorten and photosynthesis slows down, green chlorophyll slowly disappears from leaves. Depending on moisture, temperature, and plant genetics, carotenoids and anthocyanins become visible, brightening chilly autumn days! |
