Coma cluster of galaxies in the Coma Berenices

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Coma Cluster (Abell 1656) is a large cluster of galaxies that contains over 1,000 identified galaxies.Along with the Leo Cluster, it is one of the two major clusters comprising the Coma Supercluster. It is located in and takes its name from the constellation Coma Berenices. The cluster's mean distance from Earth is 99 Mpc (321 million light years). The central region is dominated by two supergiant elliptical galaxies: NGC 4874 and NGC 4889. The cluster is within a few degrees of the north galactic pole on the sky. Most of the galaxies that inhabit the central portion of the Coma Cluster are ellipticals. Both dwarf and giant ellipticals are found in abundance in the Coma Cluster.
Eesti: Bereniike Juuste tähtkujus asuv Kooma galaktikaparv. Meie asume oma pisikese galaktikaterühmaga Neitsi galaktikateparves (see on tegelikult üks kõrvalharu palju suuremast Laniakea superparvest). Kooma asub meist umbes kolmandiku miljardi valgusaasta kaugusel ning koos Lõvi galaktikaparvega moodustab see palju suurema Kooma superparve. Kooma parv sisaldab tuhandeid galaktikaid, millest oletavasti sajad on ka fotol näha. Neist peamised on hiidelliptilised galaktikad NGC 4889 ja NGC 4874, mis näevad fotol välja kollakate uduste pallidena. Need on arvatavasti minevikus paljude galaktikate liitumisel tekkinud hiidgalaktikad, mille mass ületab Linnuteed 10-15 korda ning mis sisaldavad triljoneid tähti. Nende orbiidil tiirlevad paljud spiraalgalaktikad. Ainuüksi kerasparvi on NGC 4889 koosseisust leitud ligi 20 000. Võrdluseks Linnutee sisaldab neid vaid kusagil 180.
