Summary[edit]

Description
English: As seen in March 2023, the one-story, 5,500-square-foot cinderblock commercial building at 2889 Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda, New York was constructed in 1972 by the Hamburg, New York-based contracting company of Hines & Kirst, following plans by the Buffalo-based architectural firm of Shelgren, Patterson & Marzec. Though overall rather aesthetically undistinguished, the design of the building does testify to the resurgence in popularity of the mansard roof as an architectural trope in this immediately post-midcentury era of Modernism (such roofs were principally employed as a way to hide unsightly HVAC equipment from view, as was most likely the case here). The arched entrance canopy with its stainless-steel ornamentation is a later (c. 2008) addition. The building was constructed as the first of what would eventually be about a half-dozen suburban branches of American Wallpaper & Paint, whose original location had been in business since 1950 on Walden Avenue in the adjacent city of Buffalo. After that store closed in 1995, the building was subdivided.
