English: Commonwealth war graves of 8 identified Royal Air Force airmen of the Second World War. The first 7 airmen on the front row of graves died on June 12th 1943 when their Lancaster W4791 PH-W of the 12th squadron was shot down. The plane was on the way back to the England after a bombing raid on German cities and crashed in flames by Wijk aan Zee at 3 a.m. All the airmen were killed in the crash.
The grave on the back is from a Royal Canadian Air Force Flying Officer of the 12th squadron. He was the navigator of a Lancaster that crashed in the sea near Den Helder in The Netherlands on June 29th 1943. All 7 crewmen were killed in the crash. The body of the navigator was found on August 14th on the beach by Wijk aan Zee. Two of his colleagues are buried in Castricum and one is buried in Bergen op Zoom. Three airmen of the plane are still missing.
