Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Conglomerate from the Tertiary of California, USA.

Conglomeate is a poorly sorted siliciclastic sedimentary rock with rounded clasts. This sample's clasts vary in lithology and shape (angular to subangular to subrounded). I'm not sure what the cutoff is between conglomerate and breccia, in terms of angular versus rounded clast content. [The British Geological Survey suggests that "breccia" be used for a rock having sharply angular clasts - that definition does not apply to this sample.] The original sediments were deposited in an ancient fluvial (river) setting.

Stratigraphy: Amargosa Valley Formation, Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene, ~20-25 Ma

Locality: clast in modern fanglomerate, proximal part of an alluvial fan due south of Bat Mountain, southern Funeral Mountains, southeastern Inyo County, southeastern California, USA
