Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Conrad W. Zimmer House, 99 Oxford Avenue, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. A brightly colored and interestingly bedecked example of the Queen Anne school of architecture, the Zimmer House bears many of the style' hallmarks - an asymmetrical façade; Classical detailing mainly in the form of Tuscan columns on the side porch; Palladian windows within the roof gables - but by far its most prominent feature is the pedimented dormer piercing the left side of the hip roof, tucked within a recessed balcony behind an intricately carved pointed arch and a miniature spindle balustrade. The son of a retail grocer, Conrad W. Zimmer, Jr. (1856-1928) had a successful political career in his hometown of Rochester, serving two terms as Fourth Ward alderman, before moving to Buffalo and reinventing himself as a livestock broker, working in partnership with his brother Adam. He was also well-known as the owner and breeder of a number of racehorses that competed at local-area tracks. Zimmer lived in this house from its completion in 1892 until 1918, when he moved a few blocks away to a home on Lafayette Avenue.
