Summary[edit]

Description
English: Continental divides are topographic ridgelines on landmasses that separate major drainage basins. North America has 7 major drainage basins, with rivers and streams draining into: 1) Pacific Ocean or the Bering Sea; 2) Gulf of Mexico; 3) Atlantic Ocean; 4) St. Lawrence Seaway or the Labrador Sea; 5) Hudson Bay; 6) Arctic Ocean or interinsular Canadian Arctic waters; 7) Great Basin. The last one on the list is a landlocked drainage basin.

The sign in the photo marks the boundary between Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico drainage basins. The boundary extends from Alaska to Mexico - this site is in Montana. The number on the sign refers to 6368 feet elevation above sea level.

Locality: Elk Park Pass, along Interstate 15, northeast of the town of Butte, Silver Bow County-Jefferson County line, western Montana, USA
