Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Cornelius Willemsen van Kouwenhoven House, 18 Schanck Road, Holmdel Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, September 2020. Built in 1699, this one-and-a-half story, wood-framed, side-gabled residence is a fine example of Dutch Colonial vernacular architecture and retains its original appearance to a remarkable degree. Born in Brooklyn and a direct descendant of one of the first five men sent by the Dutch West India Company to settle the Netherlands' new colonial holdings in America, Cornelius Willemsen van Kouwenhoven (1672-1736) prospered in farming to such a degree that, with three other men including his future brother-in-law Garret Roelofsen Schenck he was able to purchase 500 acres of additional farmland in Monmouth County, New Jersey, on which the house now stands. He is the photographer's 8x great-grandfather. The house is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as its state-level analogue; its current residents have dubbed it Kovenhoven, using a variant spelling of the original owner's surname.
