English: Bedecked with mosaic glass around the head and cut glass in the center is this marble plaque of a woman with flowing hair, crafted by German-born sculptor and glass engraver Albert Wiegel (1869-1943) and on display in the the "35 Centuries of Glass" gallery at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. The aesthetic is exemplary of Art Nouveau, a style popular around the turn of the 20th century that expanded on Romanticism and the Arts and Crafts movement to find inspiration in natural forms, with asymmetry, curvilinear forms, vibrant colors, and floral and botanical motifs among the distinguishing characteristics. As seen during an April 2022 visit to the museum. |
