Description
English: Sited on the north east corner of the main building of Auckland City Hospital. Inscription reads: The Costley Building was officially opened on November 30th 1898 by Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It stood to the west of this site immediately opposite the new Children's Hospital. Originally planned as a Children's Hospital, it later served as a Surgical Block, an Obstetric Unit and for many years as a Hospital for the Elderly. This memorial of bricks from the Costley Building was placed here to record a Ceremony held to mark the opening of a TIME CAPSULE discovered during its demolition in April 1993. Mr Colin Stichbury, a descendant of James Stitchbury, Chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board in 1898, opened the Capsule on December 1st 1993 in the Presence of Her Excellency Dame Catherine Tizard, GCMG, DBE, Governor General of New Zealand.
