Summary[edit]

Description The Old Hickory Tavern, aka the F. W. Knox House, 4 North Main Street, Coudersport, Pennsylvania, as seen in September 2012. Built in 1880, this was originally the home of Franklin William Knox (1824-1891), a prominent attorney, local politico (a "Democrat of the Jacksonian kind" per his obituary in the local paper, he served as an elector in the 1876 Presidential election), publisher (he co-founded the Potter Enterprise in 1873), and businessman (he served as president of the Coudersport and Port Allegany Railroad) who lived in the house from its completion until a few months before his death. Architecturally, it's a fairly unusual example of the Italianate Villa style with heavy influence from the Stick style (witness the steeply-pitched trussed gables, the Gothic-inspired window hoods, and the overall prominent vertical orientation). At the time the photograph was taken, it was owned by the Rigas family, whose hopes to convert it to a bed & breakfast inn were dashed by the ignoble fall of Adelphia Communications, which they owned, and their subsequent bankruptcy and prosecution for fraud. Happily, it's since been purchased by a new owner who is in the process of restoring the building from the advanced state of decrepitude seen here back to its former glory.
