| Description |
English: Couroupita guianensis, also known as the "cannonball tree" due to its large brown spherical fruit, belongs to the Lecythidaceae family, the same as the Brazil nut Bertholletia excelsa. Originally from the rainforests of the Guianas, over the years has found itself in other places, including Rio de Janeiro. This specific tree is one of many found on the Aterro do Flamengo, here in Rio de Janeiro, the gardens of which were landscaped by Roberto Burle Marx.
The tree on average grows 30 meters high and the flowers are located mainly on the lower part of the tree on small branches coming from the trunk, which can completely cover it. The flowers have a strong scent especially at night. The most common pollinators are the bees. |
