Summary

[edit]
Description

Interbedded siliciclastics in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The Borden Formation is a significant unit in the Lower Mississippian of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. It represents an ancient deltaic succession. Prodeltaic, delta front, and delta top deposits are present in the Borden. Named members in eastern Kentucky include (from bottom to top) the Henley Member (or Henley Bed), Farmers Member, Nancy Member, Cowbell Member, and Nada Member. This outcrop near Morehead, Kentucky consists of interbedded shales, siltstones, and sandstones of the upper Cowbell Member. A significant disconformity caps the unit. The Upper Mississippian Slade Formation (formerly the Newman Limestone) occurs above it. The entire Middle Mississippian is gone here.
