Coyotes jump in the air and pounce on rodents as shown here. It is probably pouncing on a vole, which is one of the main prey for coyotes in the open space. It caught about four in the 20 minutes that I watched. This coyote has a bad case of mange and has lost much of the fur on the back of its body. This is a female. A male is in worse shape. I occasionally see a coyote that looks healthier. A man who often works in the open space said that there is a healthy pair of mating coyotes in the open space. The alpha pair allows other coyotes in the area if there is adequate food. This is at Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado. The coyote is inside the fence that protected the owl's nest on the east side of the open space.
