Cada año, el 12 de mayo, muy de mañana, Martín Cepeda, pulcramente acicalado, con sus mejores ropas y llevando en el pecho la cruz de guerra, sube las escale- ras de mi oficina. — Buenos días, capitán. — ¡Hola, Martín! 'Cómo estás.^ Bien, capitán; a saludarlo como de costumbre, pidiendo a Dios que pueda hacer lo mismo el próximo año. Y yo me levanto, aprieto su mano y le deslizo en ella algo para festejar el día. Y Martín, siempre alegre, siempre majo, baja las escaleras y vuelve a sus plomerías. Yo no sé cómo él seias arregla; pero una noche en que paseaba yo por cierta calle alta de San Juan, hallé a mi hombre, con otros amigos, frente a una ventana, metido en jolgorio; me acerqué, y vi con asombro que Martín Cepeda ¡estaba tocando la guitarra!
