| Description | Just before crossing the busy street into the old city of Shanghai, I paused to take some pictures of the shops just outside of the old city area. This is a far view of an exotic traditional building across the street. Now if you think this is exotic, just hold your guns- you haven't seen anything yet. During the era of foreign concessions (1842-1937), the International Settlement and the French Concession developed North and West of the old Shanghai city, but the old city remained entirely Chinese and foreigners seldom ventured here. This part of town was a bit of a ghetto and also a flesh pot and vice den. In these modern days however there are more foreigners here since the area has become one of Shanghai's main tourist attractions. The Old Town is not exclusively old though, as tall modern buildings have started shooting up around the two main streets of the area,. You can still however have a chance to take in the atmosphere if you wander into the quaint side streets, something I will do in just a few minutes. (Shanghai, China, May 2017) |
