| Description | Coat of arms of the Curcumelli family of Afra, Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece. "Possibly the most famous and romantic of all the Grand Old Estates is Afra, still (in 1994) inhabited by descendants of the Rodostamo and Curcumelli families. Originally from Northern Greece, Giovanni Curcumelli arrived in Corfu from Cephalonia in 1750 to escape Turkish persecution. He built his home on the ruins of a thirteenth century monastery" (Giles, Frank (ed.), Corfu: The Garden Isle, Presented by Spiro Flamburiari, John Murray, London, 1994, p.63). Afra is situated about 6 km N-W of Corfu Town; its estate was 2,000 acres in 1994 (p.63). Sir Demetrius Curcumelli, KCMG, was Regent of Corfu in 1864, under the British Protectorate. In 1994 Afra was the home of his descendant Piero Curcumelli (p.67), whose mother was Mary Flamburiari (d.1991), from another noble Corfiot family (p.64) |
