| Description |
English: Curtiss Park, 45 Carpenter Avenue, Tonawanda, New York, November 2020. Established in 1952, the park occupies the former site of the the Curtiss Aerodrome, a test field operated by the Buffalo-based Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company (later Curtiss-Wright) that's notable as the place where the Curtiss JN-4, or "Jenny", the most famous American warplane of the First World War, was developed and flown for the first time. After the war, the Aerodrome was pressed into duty as Buffalo's first venue for commercial air travel, a role it served until 1926 when the Buffalo Municipal Airport was established in Cheektowaga. Afterward, the facility saw steadily diminishing use - it was essentially derelict other than the occasional air show - and was formally decommissioned in the 1930s. |
