I Małopolskie Dni Dziedzictwa Kulturowego, 15-26 września 1999 r. Norbertanie przybyli do Hebdowa w 1149 r. i założyli tutaj klasztor. Prace we wnętrzu kościoła trwały jeszcze w XVIII w., kiedy to powstała późnobarokowa dekoracja malarska oratorium i ołtarz główny. Norberta – założyciela zakonu, i św. --- Former Norbertine Abbey in Hebdów St Norbert’s (Premonstratensian) Abbey has stood at the bend in the Wisła river near Nowe Brzesko for over eight centuries. The monks were brought here in 1149 from the Bohemian Strahov by knights Szczeżysław and Wrocisław with the consent of Boleslaus (Bolesław) the Curly. The monks established their monastery here. Initially it was probably a small, wooden church, yet in the 13th century it was replaced by a solid one. In the course of a few centuries, the Abbey was endowed with surrounding villages and land, the present area of Nowe Brzesko. The town itself was chartered by the Abbot of Hebdów in 1279. Remodelling of the modest 13th-century church and abbey was started in the latter half of the 17th century by Abbot Melchior Olszewski. An oratory chapel was built as an extension of the chancel in the east, the main corpus of the church was divided into the nave and two aisles, and two towers were added. The interior received a grand, late-Baroque appearance. In 1819 the Norbertine abbey was liquidated. Since 1832, the church was in the hands of the parish priests, and since 1949 the church serves the parish under the administration of the Piarists. The oldest part of the church – devoted to the Assumption of Virgin Mary – is the rectangular chancel from the latter half of the 13th century. The oratory chapel enclosing it in the east is square-shaped, with three apses and covered with a dome incorporating a lantern. The dome’s interior is covered with a rich stucco and paint decoration created by Andrzej Radwański, depicting the eight benedictions, four continents, and music-playing angels. Although the original mural was painted over in 1881 by Franciszek Radwan, it was uncovered during the restoration works of 1989-2000. The Baroque main altar is decorated with mirrors and an interesting technique of ‘marbled’ stucco painted on silver. In the niche above the altar there is a Madonna with Child statue (ca 1400), behind the Baroque sliding-door painting of Transubstantiation of Christ. The figure revered for centuries and famed for the miracles professed is a true treasure of the church in Hebdów. Gilded statues of St Norbert and St Augustine, author of the rule followed by Premonstratensians, are standing by the arcade. The oratory of the departed is situated under the church and used for the funerary ceremonies. It is connected by a corridor to the vault where the monks are buried.
