Deutsch: „Das Wappen zeigt unter einer dreizinnigen Mauerkrone mit geschlossenem Tor einen auf der Spitze stehenden Dreieckschild, der durch eine senkrechte Linie in zwei Felder geteilt ist. Im heraldisch linken Feld liegen auf Goldgrund (Gelb) drei rot-weiß geschachte Balken übereinander, im rechten Feld auf blauem Grund eine silbergraue (weiße) Spindel mit abgewickeltem Fadenstück.“ Der Stadt Gummersbach ist durch königlichen Erlass vom 27.07.1892 das Recht zur Führung eines Stadtwappens verliehen worden. Die weiß-roten Schachbalken auf goldenem Grund waren die Wappenzier der Grafen von der Mark, die 350 Jahre lang Landesherren über das Amt Neustadt und über die Veste Gummersbach gewesen sind. Die Spindel steht für die Textilindustrie, welche eine lange Tradition in Gummersbach hatte.
English: „Gummersbach developed rapidly from a small village to a large city during the early 19th century, due to the metal and textile industry. The right part of the arms thus show a spindle as a symbol for the textile industry. The left part shows the arms of the Counts of the Mark, as the area belonged to the Mark since 1287.“
