Deutsch: Das genaue Gründungsdatum von Tempelhof ist nicht bekannt, jedoch geht die Namensgebung auf die christlichen Tempelritter zurück, die sich hier um 1200 angesiedelt haben. In einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1247 wird ein Magister Hermanus de Templo erwähnt. 1290 tauchte der Name Tempelhof dann im Zusammenhang mit der Schenkung des Ritters Jacob von Neyde auf, der der Franziskaner-Klosterkirche eine Ziegelscheune "die zwischen Tempelhof und Berlin" lag, schenkte. 1344 wird erstmals der johannitische Komtur Buchhard von Arenholz als "commendator in Tempelhoff" benannt. Das Zeichen der Tempelritter – ein rotes Kreuz auf einem Schild – war bis zur Bezirksreform von 2001 auch das Wappenzeichen Tempelhofs.
English: The name of the district is derived from the Estate of the Templar knights until 1312. The cross is the symbol of the Knights of the Temple.
