This photo is after the third step in DNA extraction: salting off the protein

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: I extracted DNA from cow thymus and took pictures during the first three steps of the process, under a microscope. The first step in DNA extraction is isolating the cell nuclei. The goal of this step is to break open cells, in order to release the nuclei (where the DNA is located). The second step in DNA extraction is lysing the nuclei. The goal of this step is to release the chromatin (DNA strands) from the nuclei, using EDTA solution and SDS solution. The third step in DNA extraction is salting off the protein. The goal of this step is to break the bonds between the DNA and the protein it is bound to, using a salt solution. The fourth step in DNA extraction is separating the DNA from the protein using ethanol. After this step, the DNA can be collected.
