Français : La tour Saint-Georges, contemporaine du Fort Rouge, est un des témoins de la première enceinte communale de Tournai (XIIe siècle). Cette tour de plan circulaire est rattachée aux remparts par des flancs droits, ce qui lui confère un plan en U s’élevant sur trois niveaux. L’entrée se faisait initialement par le premier étage, depuis la courtine jusqu’à une première salle voûtée. Un escalier pris dans l’épaisseur du mur, bien visible au niveau des archères, permettait ensuite le passage vers le niveau inférieur qui comprenait une seconde pièce voutée.
Suite à la hausse démographique de Tournai et à l’achat de nouveaux faubourgs à la fin du XIIIe siècle, la ville repousse les limites formées par ses défenses, donnant ainsi naissance à la deuxième enceinte communale. Devenus obsolètes, les fossés de la tour sont réutilisés par le Grand Serment des Arbalétriers, dont le saint patron n’est autre que saint Georges, pour ses exercices de tir. Plus tard, la tour Saint-Georges deviendra une habitation et sera totalement englobée dans le tissu urbain.
