Between 1534 and 1541, Jacques Cartier made three trips to Canada in the name of France’s King Francis I. Like other European explorers, he was looking for riches and a new route to Asia.

On his second trip, in 1535, he came with 110 men and three ships, the Grande Hermine, Petite Hermine and Emerillon. They set up camp at the mouth of the Saint-Charles River near the site of what is now Quebec City.

Winter was a disaster - 25 of his men died and relations with his native hosts soured. The survivors returned to France in May 1536.

On his third voyage in 1541, he sought to establish a colony, but was bedevilled by the same problems - disease, misunderstandings with the Iroquoian inhabitants and no precious metal to be found. In 1543, they went home.

Despite the setbacks, Cartier’s accounts of his travels raised awareness of New France and particularly the St.Lawrence route to the interior.
