Summary[edit]

Description This historic industrial building in Cincinnati's Queensgate neighborhood was built in the late 19th Century, back when the area was a part of the West End and filled with residential and mixed-use buildings. The mid-20th Century wasn't kind to the neighborhood, as much of it was demolished for the construction of Interstate 75 through the city, as well as urban renewal that consisted of the Queensgate Industrial Park on the west side of Interstate 75 around Union Terminal and this building, as well as the redevelopment of the lower West End and Kenyon-Barr neighborhoods on the east side of Interstate 75, replacing the historic urban fabric with public low-income apartment projects that quickly became crime-ridden and made the misery of the people there worse than it had ever been before. Only a few small fragments of the West End and Kenyon-Barr survived, today located in several small fragments consisting of individual buildings west of Interstate 75, and a few scattered structures as well as more intact districts on the east side. Today, very little remains of the old West End west of Interstate 75, and few buildings are protected under historic designation, something that needs to change. The neighborhood on the east side of the interstate, meanwhile, is more intact, but is also threatened, mainly by neglect, which has claimed many structures already. These pieces of history are slipping away, and urgently need to be stabilized so as to preserve them for future generations.
