Datowanie: "po 1693" (Portrety osobistości 1967, poz. 63) poddała w wątpliwość Ruszczycówna, przytaczając takie argumenty: - obraz powstał przed "victorią" wiedeńską 1683, bo nie ma w nim aluzji do Wiednia, ani tej batalii, a nadto Sobieski nie jest jeszcze tak tęgi jak był w r. 1683, - portret został namalowany nim Sobieski został królem, bo nie ma w obrazie regaliów, - ukazany został jak zwycięski dowódca wojskowy, laur wieńczy jego skronie na podobieństwo wodzów rzymskich.

Ruszczycówna sugeruje, że okazją do namalowania obrazu było zwycięstwo nad Turkami pod Chocimiem w roku 1673, które utorowało Sobieskiemu drogę na tron królewski w roku 1674, a rzeczony obraz datuje na ok. 1677. Ruszczycówna 1982, s. 228-9.
