The series, now bound as three volumes, was purchased in parts and is registered under 5 different numbers: 1886,0706.12; 1888,0515.3; 1889,0318.75; 1890,0311.2; and 1891,0511.396.

The locations of the three volumes are as follows: Part 1: survey of the work of Adolph Menzel illustrated with numerous photogravures after his drawings, paintings, and prints, and bound with titlepage with view of the artist in his studio (located 245.a.22). Part 2: 66 plates after works from the period 1833-1870 (located 245.a.23) Part 3: 124 plates after works from the period 1871-1889 (located 245.a.24)
