DescriptionDazu 2007 746.jpg |
English: Ananda and the Dutiful Son. Scene #18, bottom right side. Baodingshan, Dazu
This story relates the origin of the Baoen Jing sutra. From left to right: Buddha's disciple Ananda (cut off at photo left) encounters a dutiful son who is laboriously carrying his aged parents in baskets suspended from his shoulders. Two Hindu Brahmins praise the filial son, and disparage Shakyamuni's own filiality by comparison. Ananda reported this encounter to the Buddha, who preached the Baoen Jing Sutra in response. At the photo right is a group of foreign entertainers, playing musical instruments and dancing, beneath a flute-player in an alcove. |
